In November 2022, it became evident that my then 93 year old dad, who was living on his own at Walkill Living Center in Middletown, NY, was having difficulty carrying out daily tasks around his apartment given his mobility issues and advanced age. His wife of approximately 50 years had been suffering from dementia and had to leave the apartment permanently for related care not too long before. This also left my dad without any daily person-to-person interaction. I live in Washington DC area with my family and due to work obligations, was unable to get up to see my dad regularly. I had been dealing with Orange County Office for the Aging and they provided me with a local company called First Choice Senior Services. Not knowing what to expect, I reached out to First Choice and I was instantly impressed with Kim and Anne. They were compassionate, caring and explained the process in great detail. They promptly arranged for a visit with my dad to assess the care needed and offered several care options. I immediately arranged for daily morning visits. The companions helped my dad every morning, running errands, cooking, straightening up, taking him to doctor appointments, bathing, providing him conversation, going on walks around the building, etc. Occasionally, my dad had to go to the hospital given age related issues and First Choice would coordinate hospital visits and upon returning home to his apartment, would increase companion visits (evenings and, in some cases, around the clock) to ensure my dad was receiving the assistance he needed. The companions all worked well together too - maintaining a daily log of activity, etc. I continued with First Choice for 2 years - until November 9th, 2024 when my almost 96 year-old dad finally conceded to moving in and living with a relative on Long Island. First Choice did an incredible job with caring for my dad for 2 years and I'm forever grateful. I highly recommend First Choice for your caregiver/companion needs.
